Until the late 1970s, Scotland's TFR was slightly higher than that for England and Wales. However, since the early 1980s, Scotland's TFR has dropped steadily below the levels for England and Wales. It is interesting to note that the recent rise in fertility levels in Scotland has been paralleled elsewhere in the UK.
